Why BYOM Matters for AI Governance and Control

The AI model you choose today may not be the one you’ll need tomorrow.

Models improve, costs change, policies evolve, and different marketing tasks need different capabilities. Yet 71% of executives say switching their primary AI vendor or model would be difficult.¹

What is BYOM

Bring Your Own Model, or BYOM, lets enterprises connect and use the AI models they choose, instead of building marketing around a vendor-selected LLM.²

A multi-model marketing environment might use:

• A fast model to score thousands of subject lines.
• A reasoning model to interpret campaign performance.
• An internal model for churn, propensity, or offer selection.
• An on-premises model for data that cannot leave your environment.

BYOM allows you to use models your organization already trusts, including proprietary, open-source, self-hosted, or approved third-party models, without rebuilding marketing operations around each one.

Architecturally, that means the marketing system can remain relatively stable while the intelligence underneath changes.

AI Governance Starts With Model Choice 

Choosing an AI model is also a governance decision. Different LLMs come with different requirements around data, security, deployment and risk.

But when the model changes, the rules shouldn't. 

Enterprises need consistent data access, permissions, review, auditability, PII safeguards and security controls across models and agents. This is increasingly reflected in enterprise AI governance approaches, where controls remain centralized even as models and workloads change.

Governance has to survive the model switch. A new LLM shouldn't mean a new governance framework.

Changing an LLM is easy only if the rest of the AI system isn't built around that specific model. 

This is where the idea of an AI harness becomes useful. An AI harness is the layer around the model that provides the context, tools, memory and controls an AI agent needs to work reliably.³

LLM: the intelligence. Harness: the context and the control. 

BYOM only works cleanly if that second layer stays put while the first one changes.

Is Your AI Stack Ready for BYOM?

Supporting multiple models isn't enough. A BYOM-ready stack should make changing models relatively uneventful.

Enterprises should look for a few things:

• Can we choose the model? Or are we limited to the vendor's preferred AI?
• Can different agents use different models? One model shouldn't have to fit every task.
• Can we switch without rebuilding workflows? Your campaigns and processes shouldn't depend on one LLM.
• Do our controls stay consistent? Permissions, PII safeguards and governance shouldn't reset with every model.
• Can we choose where AI runs? Some workloads may need different deployment or data-handling requirements.

The simplest test:

If your preferred AI model changed tomorrow, how much of your marketing operation would have to change with it?

If the answer is a lot, you may have model choice, but you don't yet have true model flexibility.
