The Challenge

With a 180-year legacy of innovation, this global leader in commercial explosives is no stranger to the challenges of business. Their products and services exist not just to do a job, but to do a job efficiently and effectively. Over 3,700 employees across three continents rely on timely, accurate information to deliver quality customer experiences.

Like most companies with a global presence and multiple locations, employees previously used three different systems to manage daily tasks, such as picking and delivering explosives to customers. Global regulations require strict Track and Trace capabilities to monitor products from manufacturing through consumption. Legacy scanners, specifically aging Lazer and BCScan devices, combined with manual processes, create double scanning errors and compliance risks.

A multi-system approach led to:

  • Duplicate Work: Employees had to record the same process across three systems, resulting in inefficiencies.
  • Complexity: Using different systems for the same tasks increased the likelihood of errors and slowed down operations.
  • Lack of Integration: The systems did not seamlessly integrate with their SAP backend and third-party “Track and Trace” systems.

They required a unified solution to eliminate duplication, improve process efficiency, and integrate all systems into one application.

The Solution

You know your business, just like this global expert of commercial explosives knows theirs. They required a solution which internal resources could mold and shape to become whatever they needed it to be.

HCL Volt MX provides a comprehensive mobile solution, replacing its three existing systems with a single application. It’s fully integrated with their SAP backend and third-party “Track and Trace” systems. The development team also retired aging hardware in favor of modern Android Zebra TC53x devices to support a modern user interface.

Delivering significant improvements in user experience and operational efficiency, the application’s key functionalities include:

  • Offline-first syncing: The app stores data locally and syncs when connectivity becomes available. This capability proves critical for remote locations.
  • Driver validation: Operators can verify items in the truck, make inventory changes during loading, and print the inventory when they’re in the truck.
  • Haptics and sensory feedback: The app provides voice confirmation and a quick vibration for good scans, as well as voice warnings with continuous vibration for errors. The haptic notification is useful in noisy environments where they may not be able to keep their eyes on their screens.
  • Smart validation: The system checks TTE inventory against compliance rules to prevent duplicate scans. Users can also reverse barcode scan errors.
  • Picking/picking confirmation: Streamlining the process of selecting the correct explosives for delivery.
  • Customer receipt (goods receipt): Capturing customer acknowledgment upon delivery of goods, replacing paper with instant digital signatures.
  • Packing: Guaranteed correct packaging and labeling of explosives before shipment.
  • Order fulfillment and inventory management: Automatic updates to the SAP system once goods are dispatched, including fully visible and manageable stock transfers across locations. Real-time inventory audits to maintain accurate stock levels.
  • Printing labels and manifests: Simplification of label creation for products and shipping manifests.
  • Barcode scanning: Use of barcodes to track products efficiently throughout the supply chain. Data tables optimize rapid trigger scanning, which prevents workflow bottlenecks at the loading dock.

The Results

Unification is at the core of the results HCL Volt MX brings to this global company. One software solution unites multiple systems and seamlessly integrates into already existing platforms.

Reducing redundant work increased productivity and minimized duplicated efforts. Automated business functions and single-scan accuracy maximized efficiency. The company achieved full compliance by making the entire chain of custody visible. Offline capabilities also increased reliability out in the field. In addition, Volt MX improved accuracy and efficiency in handling and delivering customer orders.

The motto of “work smarter, not harder” applies to HCL Volt MX and this company’s relationship. We’re committed to developing and delivering practical and reliable solutions to anticipate the future, together.
