Global Humanitarian Organization Automates Patching using BigFix
Company: World Vision International
Industry: Non Profit
Products: BigFix Lifecycle
Partner: Alacrinet
Challenge
World Vision International (WVI) has offices around the global with centralized and remote IT groups, each responsible for distributing patches and software to their end users. Multiple teams, multiple tools and manual processes created unnecessary complexity, costs, and security risk.
Solution
By standardizing on BigFix, WVI has implemented a flexible and effective endpoint management platform whereby patching and software distribution responsibilities can be shared by IT staff in Global Centers as well as in Field Offices.
Results
BigFix is expected to:
- Reduce the effort to gather valuable endpoint information such as Operating System (OS) version, RAM, memory, and BIOS level across all endpoints in less than a day, which currently takes almost one month to collect.
- Reduce the time to deploy a software package to 23,000 endpoints from two to three months to just one month.
- Simplify and centralize patching without requiring intervention of IT staff in remote field offices, reducing patch cycle time from two weeks to only one to two days.
- Improve OS hardening policies, enabling WVI to effectively deliver OS updates across all devices.
BigFix Lifecycle provides efficiency and intuitiveness in patching, software deployment and overall endpoint remediation, effectively reducing manual intervention and coordination, while providing overall visibility of patch, software, and operating systems deployment in real-time.

Business Challenge
World Vision International (WVI) needed a standardized Windows OS patching across all offices to ensure that workstations were less vulnerable to security risks and threats. Various offices were independently and inconsistently applying patches and patch polices. There was a need for a more consistent and reliable means to update endpoints across their global enterprise, including Global Centers and Field Offices. Additionally, WVI needed a standardized and efficient means of deploying and tracking software to ensure mandatory applications were deployed across all endpoints worldwide.
Transformation
Prior to implementing BigFix, patching was done through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) or manually using Windows update. There was no standard patching methodology or tool across the organization and there was no global visibility of patch status or deployments.
In addition, software was manually installed by IT for local users, or by using Team Viewer when users were remote.
Although WVI considered other solutions, they selected BigFix because it provided an effective endpoint management solution for multiple operating systems and enabled WVI to implement a consistent, global patch policy. An HCL Business Partner, Alacrinet, introduced WVI to BigFix and is currently engaged to help WVI deploy BigFix and endpoint automation across the globe.
Results
By deploying BigFix, WVI now has a single tool for patching, software distribution, and remote desktop control that automates manual tasks and streamlines endpoint management processes. Now, with BigFix’s flexible role-based administration, WVI can deploy critical and important patches and mandatory software across all end user systems while allowing the Field Offices to deploy less critical or application-specific patches and software.
BigFix Lifecycle provides efficiency and intuitiveness in patching, software deployment and overall endpoint remediation, effectively reducing manual intervention and coordination, while providing overall visibility of patch, software, and operating systems deployment in real-time.
