The Challenge

Archangel of Mercy needed a robust, reliable, and compliant digital solution to manage complex wound care for patients. Clinicians, who often work on-site in various environments, require a way to consistently assess, treat, and manage wounds using the STEPP method for treating outcomes. Key challenges included:

  • Subjectivity in assessments: Bringing consistency and objectivity to wound assessment and tracking its healing status over time.
  • Manual processes: Automating the measurement of wound dimensions and reducing the administrative burden of ordering supplies.
  • Connectivity issues: Ensuring the application works seamlessly even in low-bandwidth or offline environments.
  • Complex supply chain: Streamlining the process of ordering from over 25,000 products and managing insurance approvals.
  • Compliance: Integrating telemedicine features and data management that adhere to strict HIPAA compliance rules.

The Solution

Using HCL Volt MX, Archangel of Mercy developed a comprehensive Patient Wound Care Management application for web and mobile, running on iPads used by the nurses. The solution links the clinical assessment directly with an e-commerce backend to create a seamless care delivery workflow. The HCL Volt MX application empowers nurses to:

  • Conduct digital assessments: During on-site visits, nurses use the app to perform e-assessments, take photos of the wound and make precise graphical selections and measurements directly within the app.
  • Automate supply ordering: Based on wound assessment, the app recommends a list of necessary dressings and medicines from a catalog of over 25,000 products. These items are automatically added to a shopping cart.
  • Streamline insurance approvals: The shopping cart is sent to the patient's insurance company for approval. In many cases, requests are pre-approved by proprietary logic, triggering an automatic shipment of supplies directly to the patient’s home.
  • Enable telemedicine: The app integrates telemedicine functionality, allowing patients to connect with doctors or nurses for follow-up consultations when needed.
  • Ensure data security: All patient data is encrypted, and communications are HIPAA compliant to protect sensitive information.

The Results

The HCL Volt MX solution was deployed quickly and has been instrumental in transforming Archangel of Mercy’s service delivery. For five years, it has run successfully with a lean team, which has continued to add new features, highlighting the platform’s ease of maintenance and scalability. Key outcomes include:

  • Objective and collaborative care: The application brings objectivity into wound care assessment and allows for the collaborative tracking of all patients in one central place for the clinic.
  • Faster care for patients: Patients benefit faster, automated insurance approvals and the quick shipment of necessary medical supplies directly to their homes.
  • Operational efficiency: The solution offers crucial offline capabilities for nurses working in areas with poor connectivity. The ability to maintain and enhance the application with a very lean team demonstrates a significant reduction in operational overhead.
  • Accelerated deployment: Archangel of Mercy was able to develop and deploy the sophisticated solution very quickly, speeding time-to-market for this critical service.

Technologies used:

  • HCL Volt MX: Volt Iris and Volt Foundry
  • Backend: J2EE/Java, JavaScript
  • Cloud and Database: Amazon Web Services (AWS), AWS RDS
  • Compliance and Security: Paubox for HIPAA-compliant email and AES encryption
  • Telemedicine: Quickbox API for integrated chat and calling functionality
  • AI & Automation: APIs to auto-detect wound information from photos and videos

Ultimately, the Patient Wound Care app’s success lies in the empowerment of frontline clinicians. By connecting nurses at the patient’s side directly to objective data, automated ordering, and collaborative tools, HCL Volt MX transformed a complex manual process into a streamlined, digitized workflow. This solution securely bridges the gap between on-site patient care and core back-end systems, driving operational excellence and ensuring that both caregivers and patients benefit from a faster, more connected healthcare experience.
