2023 Value Stream Management Trends: A Recap

In the fall of 2023, we surveyed more than 10,000 professionals spanning various positions, industries and global locations. This comprehensive report provides a panoramic snapshot of the prevailing landscape and shedding light on the collective insights garnered from this extensive survey. Given that VSM is still in its developing stages, numerous organizations find themselves losing value on a daily basis. Seeking a deeper understanding of this phenomenon, HCLSoftware conducted extensive research, dissecting the trends associated with Value Stream Management.

Respondents provided us with a lot of insights into the current challenges companies face and how they are organizing and sharing responsibility for value. The responses also shed light on the direction that companies intend to move towards in the future.

Value Streams are Everywhere

In our survey we asked if they are aligned to a specifically identified or explicitly named value stream. Half (50 percent) of the respondents said “Yes”. This shows us that value streams are pretty common in today’s organizations.

Enterprises Are Benefiting by Organizing Around Value Streams

Improved collaboration was the top choice with 35%. Improved collaboration leads to smoother workflow integration, faster decision-making, and ultimately, more efficient delivery of value to customers.

Teams Rely on Complex Homegrown Dashboards

80 percent of respondents selected “Yes, Business Intelligence (BI)” when asked if their organization has tried to build a homegrown dashboard and a reporting solution. Custom-built dashboards are tailored to specific needs and workflows. It provides team with real-time insights, analytics, and performance metrics, allowing them to make data-driven decisions and drive continuous improvement.

Users Need Actionable Insights to Improve Flow

In today’s organizations, one of the main challenges users’ face is the ability to use the output for Value Stream Management. 40 percent of respondents reported this in our survey. Not having an output for VSM can slow the organization's efficiency and meet their customer needs effectively.
