End of Support Announcement: HCL Unica V9.1.X

HCL is announcing the withdrawal of sales and support for HCL Unica Version 9.1.X effective on May 1, 2024. Here is the extended notice:

End of Marketing (EOM). HCL will cease selling these specific product versions and remove them from the HCL License and Download Portal (FlexNet) effective May 1, 2023.

End of Support (EOS). HCL will cease providing support for this version effective June 30, 2024. Customers with current entitlements will continue to have access to the recent software HCL Unica versions to support their ongoing customer upgrades. Additionally, customers with software already installed will continue to receive program support in accordance with the applicable agreement through the End of Support Effective Date of June 30, 2024.

Extended Support. Due to the age of this release, HCL will not be offering extended support for this specific product version.

What options do I have to move to HCL Unica V12.1

Over time, we have provided various options to customers using HCL Unica Marketing Platform/Foundation who want to upgrade to the latest version, HCL Unica V12.1. Here are the different paths available:

Upgrade to V12.1 As-Is/Business as Usual: With this option, customers can continue to use their existing entitlements, i.e., HCL Unica Classic Modules (Campaign/Plan/Interact/Optimize) and convert them to the new HCL Unica V12.1 equivalent entitlements. This option will allow customers to upgrade to the latest version and configure the license server required to operate the HCL Unica V12.1 production environment. You can contact your sales representative or business partner to upgrade at any time during your existing contract duration or at the time of your renewal.

Move to V12.1 with UPP Conversion: This option allows customers to upgrade to HCL Unica V12.1 by trading up their existing licenses for a premium and getting entitlements to use all the new modules/licenses of 12.1. Customers will also get entitlements to certain quantities of HCL Unica Power Pack (UPP) over and above their existing entitlements, which is an entitlement that enables the complete use of HCL Unica Platform (except for certain 3rd party components). By upgrading to this option, customers not only get access to new HCL Unica modules but also get HCL Unica containers to deploy on any cloud of their choice, as HCL Unica is cloud-native and supports multiple cloud deployments. This option is best done at the time of your renewal, but we can support it anytime during your existing contract duration. Reach out to your sales representative or business partner to upgrade.

Move to V12.1 with HCL Unica Marketing Cloud: HCL Unica Marketing Cloud is a new cloud-hosted HCL Unica Managed Service that provides an interesting option for those customers who want to use HCL Unica's new capabilities and features as they are made available but would like to pass up the responsibility of hosting, maintaining, operating and upgrading the environment. This option is available to simplify the adoption of new HCL Unica capabilities and reduce the time to market for new marketing campaigns that can leverage the best and latest from HCL Unica Software. Talk to your sales representative to know more about this option.

How will upgrading to v12 impact my existing marketing ops processes?

Upgrading from v9.x to v12.x requires new hardware, and a FastUpgrade approach will be used, which means your existing v9.x environment will be available while your team is testing the upgrade using the new HCL Unica v12.1.x environment. Any triggers, scripts, or integrations built for v9.x will need to be migrated and updated to the HCL Unica v12.1.x environment.

How much time will I need to spend educating and enabling my team on v12?

We have made numerous improvements to the HCL Unica interface between v9.x and v12.1.x. However, the core elements most frequently used, like the Campaign flowchart, remain the same. In our experience, after a review of new features/functions (which during an HCL Unica Services Upgrade Engagement, we typically spend 4 hours presenting to existing HCL Unica users), they can successfully start using HCL Unica v12.1.x.

What is the expected downtime associated with the conversion and switchover to HCL Unica V12.1?

The downtime required for upgrading to HCL Unica V12.1 is limited to the time needed to create a "Golden Copy" of your HCL Unica data from the existing v9.x environment, restore it to the new v12.1.5 environment, and run the HCL Unica FastUpgrade. Typically, this process takes no more than four hours, but it may take longer if the amount of data is large. The advantage of the FastUpgrade is that it minimizes downtime. We recommend performing the "Golden Copy" and running the HCL Unica FastUpgrade twice in the "to be" HCL Unica V12.1.x production environment - once to allow sufficient time for end-users to test not only HCL Unica but all end-to-end processes around it, and then again during the Go Live Cut-over Weekend after successful testing. Then perform some base level testing and go live with HCL Unica V12.1.x.
